In this arts integration STEM program, grade 3-5 teachers use music and movement to deepen student understanding of multiplication patterns. Too often, students memorize multiplication tables without developing a deep understanding of the fundamental patterns of multiplication and division. For some students, rote memorization comes so quickly that those essential connections are never made and number sense is not deepened. For others, the challenge to memorize facts that have no meaning is just too difficult. And when kids fail to develop a conceptual understanding of multiplication and division, they struggle later with fractions and algebra.
