learn moreMany early and emerging readers practice phoneme identification, word segmentation, and phoneme blending using a loud, non-fluent, and exaggerated voice. Unfortunately, for some readers this practice develops into a vocal habit. Join our Teaching the Music of Language: Word Study arts integration workshop for educators and learn to lead oral language activities that develop smooth and natural reading fluency.
Begin by learning how to lead simple phoneme blending activities that use a smooth, natural voice over a steady beat – laying the foundation for reading fluency. When students phoneme blend and segment with musicality, they can better hear and identify the sound patterns in word families.
Next, discover how children can create their own classroom books that emphasize onset, rime, blending, and word building. All students enthusiastically read and re-read their own books alone and with others! This provides authentic and engaging fluency practice. Watch the video below to see what 1st graders wrote after their teacher attended this workshop.
