Patterns are the building blocks of all mathematics. Seeing the colorful Rhythm & Movements cards while chanting and moving activates multiple learning modalities. This multi-sensory instruction brings math concepts to life!
Students deeply analyze repeating patterns. They take turns teaching each other the logic behind pattern labeling.
They take turns showing each other how to decompose repeating patterns into pattern units.
Students collaborate with partners to create their own movement patterns. Then they take the role of the teacher -- performing their moves for the class and asking a sequence of questions that guide to audience to analyze their work.
About this Workshop
In this arts integration STEM training educators learn to use rhythm and movement to build patterns and analyze grouping, addition, and part-to-whole math concepts. Do your students really understand how everything in math is a pattern? Can they feel these patterns when they move? Or hear these patterns in musical rhythms? In this workshop you’ll learn how to break patterns apart and identify the math concepts and content standards that are embedded inside.
When students experience how patterns in rhythm and movement connect to patterns in math, they understand mathematics on a deeper level. Children move past rote memorization and develop conceptual thinking.
