Grouping Games for Making Number Comparisons
Description
A book of seven arts integrated Grouping Games for K-1 students. STEM lessons include: Same Amount, Different Amount; Equal; Greater Than; Less Than; How Many More Than; and How Many Less Than.
There are no students glued to their desks during Moving Through Math! Children start by learning how to cooperate with others in small groups. Then students learn how actors project their voices, engage their bodies, and stay focused to perform for an audience. When they play these Grouping Games, Kindergarten and 1st grade students collaborate in small groups and use their drama skills to represent mathematical situations. Together, the performers and the audience use the Language of Math to concisely explain the math concepts seen in the performance.
Each lesson inlcudes three scaffolded steps, providing the gradual release from whole group work, to small group work, to individual work. Whole group work is the active learning during Grouping Games. In small groups students use math manipulatives to practice the Language of Math. Finally, students draw and label pictures to build individual student portfolios.
