Then children practice how to face the audience, make strong facial and body expressions, and stay focused! When they play these Grouping Games, K-2 students rehearse in small groups and then use their drama skills to act out math concepts. Together, the performers and the audience use the Language of Math to concisely explain the mathematics of the situation.
Each lesson includes three progressive steps, providing the gradual release from whole group work, to small group work, to individual work. Whole group work is the active rehearsing and performing during Grouping Games. In small groups students work with math manipulatives to practice the Language of Math. Finally, students draw and label pictures to build individual student portfolios.
