Grouping Games for Teaching Place Value
Description
This book features five arts integrated Grouping Games for grade 1-2 students. STEM lessons include: Equal Groups; Place Value of Tens and Ones; Place Value of Hundreds, Tens, and Ones; Positional Place Value; and Expanded Notation.
Students are up and moving during Moving Through Math! Children start by learning how to work with others in small groups. Then students learn how actors project their voices and stay focused to perform for an audience. When they play these Grouping Games, 1st and 2nd grade students collaborate in small groups and use their drama skills to represent mathematical situations. Together, the performers and the audience use the Language of Math to concisely explain the math concepts seen in the performance.
Each lesson inlcudes three scaffolded steps, providing the gradual release from whole group work, to small group work, to individual work. Whole group work is the active learning during Grouping Games. In small groups students use math manipulatives to practice the Language of Math. Finally, students draw and label pictures to build individual student portfolios.
